It is the dream of many to run their own small business. While the idea of having total control sounds good in theory...a lot of people fail to consider the many factors necessary to achieve success. Here are three things to consider:

1. Are You Comfortable With Failure?

It is a fact that there are a lot of small business failures. Some fail because the owners give up at the first sign of trouble while others fail because the owners lack certain skills necessary for success.

In order to enter and remain in the realm of those who succeed, you have to possess the inner strength to hold on tight to your dream and keep moving. There are circumstances where you might experience complete failure and have to try something new. Even at that point, you can "snatch victory from the jaws of defeat" by remaining true to your vision of being in control of your financial destiny. Oftentimes, failing at one venture leads you to the one that is perfect for you. Keep what Winston Churchill said in mind..."success is going from failure to failure without losing enthusiasm".

2. Are You Willing To Stand Alone?

It can get very lonely on the dreams highway. Here is a story I once heard that will shed some light on what I am saying:

You see a man running in two directions...first right...then left...back and forth, acting like he is trying to catch something. The only problem is you see nothing...because the rabbit is visible only to the man. Many people would think that the man is crazy because they can't see what he is chasing.

That's how it often is when you are pursuing your goals. They are very clear to you but invisible to others. As a result, sometimes even your closest loved ones might not support you because they don't see what you see or feel what you feel. Thus, the need to be strong enough to stand alone when the world "thinks you are losing your mind".

3. Are You A Constant Learner?

Add ignorance about business to arrogance and you have a surefire recipe for failure. Yes, it feels great to be in charge and running the show, but at the same time, you have to practice humility. Don't act like you know everything because no one does.

Focus on learning about the many aspects involved in running your business. Even if you have hired others to perform certain duties, you will still find it advantageous to have some overall knowledge of your operation...it will foster more productive communication and problem solving.

To succeed as a small business owner, you need to acquire a lot of technical knowledge on various aspects of the business. You also need to make sure that you develop and maintain the right mindset which is what will keep you going when the going gets tough.
